Visual Aids: Postcards from the Edge

Yesterday was the postmark deadline for Visual Aids' annual fundraiser, Postcards from the Edge. Basically every year they put out an open call for 4" x 6" artworks, to be exhibited en masse, anonymously, in a Chelsea gallery for one weekend around the holidays. Each piece is sold for $75 whether it was made by Kiki Smith, Jeff Koons, or a nobody like me. All proceeds go to support the fight against AIDS and aiding HIV+ artists. Every year I try to twist all of my friends' arms into doing it too; it's just that I think the benefit is a really great idea on several different levels. This is my third year doing it and I almost didn't make it, but I said Renee, you asshole, get your little brushes. And I did. Got to the post office at 2:30pm with my parcel properly packaged (DRY, wrapped in vellum and sandwiched between cardboard accompanied by accurately completed, necessary forms). Here she blows:

I've felt like this forever (tired kids)

I always forget when I am making something, that metallic paints reproduce horribly. Yet I cannot resist their charms. This is a pencil drawing based off of a vintage photo, with metallic peach tempera. Nothing epic but I'm taking a break from over-thinking everything, allowing myself to break some of my dumber, self-imposed rules and playing with ideas and imagery.

Hooves for no reason

So I made these hooves to put in an installation/arrangement of sorts, not sure exactly what I will do with them. Coincidentally, the random length of braided yarn happens to make this a perfect jump rope.

We get so focused on how big our goals are and how unattainable they are right now, that we don't even see that we can get there by taking small steps every day to get closer and eventually do it.
